12 Steps to Self-Control — A simple daily system to stay out of extremes and live in the middle.

Step 1. Notice the Tug-of-War
Admit you’re being pulled between two extremes
(all or nothing, binge or starve, explode or shut down).

Step 2. Name Your Middle Path for Today
Decide what “middle” looks like just for the next 24 hours
(not perfect, just better and doable).
This is the Middle Path — choosing simple solutions that keep you steady, not perfect.

Step 3. Pause Before You Act
Use your PASS pause: Pause — Ask what’s really going on — Stay Safe before you eat, drink, scroll, yell, or spend.

Step 4. Feel the Feeling, Not the Fix
Ask, “What am I actually feeling right now?” (tired, lonely, bored, angry) and give that feeling a healthy response before you reach for your old habit.

Step 5. Change One Thing in the Environment
Adjust something outside you (put the food out of sight, change rooms, step outside, turn off the screen) so your middle-path choice becomes easier.

Step 6. Swap, Don’t Stop
Replace the old extreme with one small upgrade instead of trying to be a hero. (Less, slower, smaller, or with a built-in limit.)

Step 7. Win the Next 10 Minutes
Shrink the battle.
Commit to winning the
next 10 minutes instead of the whole day.
Reset as many times as needed.

Step 8. Tell the Truth on Paper
Jot a quick note (or phone note): what you did, how you felt, and what helped.
No judgment, just data.

Step 9. Repair Fast After a Slip
When you mess up, you interrupt the spiral: admit it, make one middle-path choice right after, and move on without beating yourself up.

Step 10. Ask for Backup
Hand it over to God, your Higher Power, or your future self.
Use tools like AI, a trusted person, or a short reset phrase you’ve chosen ahead of time to pull you back to center when you’re spinning.

Step 11. End the Day with a Reset (There Is No Endgame)
Before bed, take two minutes: what worked, what didn’t, and what “middle” will look like tomorrow.
This isn’t something you finish or win — it’s something you practice.
Then you let it go.

Step 12. Pass It On
Share one middle-path win, tool, or truth with someone else — a child, partner, coworker, or stranger online.
Helping others is how the change becomes permanent.

This core 12-step Middle Path system is the backbone of all our programs — from weight control and addiction recovery to relationships and rage. Each book applies these core steps to a different area of your life.
